How to do it

If the top fraction is smaller, borrow 1 from the whole number: 4 1/3 = 3 4/3.

6310−312=2456\tfrac{3}{10} - 3\tfrac{1}{2} = 2\tfrac{4}{5}
6310=513106\tfrac{3}{10} = 5\tfrac{13}{10}borrow 1 whole and rewrite with denominator 10
51310−3510=2+810=2455\tfrac{13}{10} - 3\tfrac{5}{10} = 2 + \dfrac{8}{10} = 2\tfrac{4}{5}
