How to do it

Move the x terms to one side and the numbers to the other.

−8x−2=x−47-8x - 2 = x - 47
−9x−2=−47-9x - 2 = -47subtract x on both sides
−9x=−45-9x = -45add 2 to both sides
x=5x = 5divide both sides by −9

Example problems

  1. −9x+10=4x−29-9x + 10 = 4x - 29
  2. −2x+2=9x+2-2x + 2 = 9x + 2
  3. −8x+11=2x−59-8x + 11 = 2x - 59
  4. 6x−7=−6x+416x - 7 = -6x + 41
