How to do it

Think in tens: 30 + 40 is 3 tens + 4 tens = 7 tens = 70.

70+20=9070 + 20 = 90
7 tens +2 tens =9 tens7\ \text{tens }+ 2\ \text{tens }= 9\ \text{tens}
