How to do it

Add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator. When subtracting, subtract the whole numerator. Simplify if you can.

6x+3x+8−5x−5x+8=6x+3−(5x−5)x+8=x+8x+8\dfrac{6x + 3}{x + 8} - \dfrac{5x - 5}{x + 8} = \dfrac{6x + 3 - (5x - 5)}{x + 8} = \dfrac{x + 8}{x + 8}subtract the whole second numerator
x+8x+8=(x+8)x+8=1\dfrac{x + 8}{x + 8} = \dfrac{(x + 8)}{x + 8} = 1factor the top, then cancel (x + 8)

Example problems

  1. 2x−4x−4−5x+5x−4=\dfrac{2x - 4}{x - 4} - \dfrac{5x + 5}{x - 4} =
  2. 5x−4x−3+3x+9x−3=\dfrac{5x - 4}{x - 3} + \dfrac{3x + 9}{x - 3} =
  3. 3x+6x+4−6x+8x+4=\dfrac{3x + 6}{x + 4} - \dfrac{6x + 8}{x + 4} =
  4. 6x−7x+7−2x+5x+7=\dfrac{6x - 7}{x + 7} - \dfrac{2x + 5}{x + 7} =
