How to do it

Write both sides as powers of the same base, then set the exponents equal.

2x+3=32x=22^{x + 3} = 32\quad x = 2
2x+3=252^{x + 3} = 2^{5}32 = 2⁵
x+3=5x + 3 = 5same base: set the exponents equal
x=2x = 2

Example problems

  1. 27x=8127^{x} = 81
  2. 2x+1=42^{x + 1} = 4
  3. 9x=819^{x} = 81
  4. 9x=39^{x} = 3
