How to do it

Put the number in for every x, in parentheses. Then follow the order of operations.

f(x)=x−7x+8;f(3)=−411f(x) = \dfrac{x - 7}{x + 8};\quad f(3) = -\dfrac{4}{11}
f(3)=3−73+8=−411f(3) = \dfrac{3 - 7}{3 + 8} = \dfrac{-4}{11}simplify the top and the bottom first

Example problems

  1. f(x)=2x+19;f(−5)=f(x) = \sqrt{2x + 19};\quad f(-5) =
  2. f(x)=−2x2+7x+5;f(−5)=f(x) = -2x^{2} + 7x + 5;\quad f(-5) =
  3. f(x)=3x−5;f(10)=f(x) = \sqrt{3x - 5};\quad f(10) =
  4. f(x)=x+9x−7;f(6)=f(x) = \dfrac{x + 9}{x - 7};\quad f(6) =
